We were ALL chuckling at Maggie because she was hyper excited to meet the 'other dog' in the door. The 'other dog' was Miss Maggie herself-:) It provided a good training distraction. Maggie is progressing in her understanding of the exercises. One thing we are all noticing is Maggie is doing an 'Air Snap' occasionally. An Air Snap is a precursor to a bite, so she has been "Outed" every time she chooses to express her opinion with her teeth.
Week 5 starts Monday morning and while there is very little 'new' exercises, there are two EXAMS (sequential) and one Pop Quiz. The two EXAMS, Vickster's Test and the String Test are hard EXAMS to accomplish with a dog that is not yet clear that "Heel" means to remain within 6-10" of their handler's left side. And the dog must have a solid AS (Auto Sit). The Pop Quiz is a hoot as it is training the learning dog to have self-control no matter what is happening.
And then next week is Week 6, where the 'magic' occurs. Once we complete Week 6, and just Jessi and I will do that 'magic' work with Maggie, the dog's belief system changes so the dog believes that obeying a "Come" command is the ONLY choice for a smart dog. It is not the work that trains a dog's mind, it is their belief that 'magic' will certainly occur should they choose to ignore a Recall command. This Week 6 training is critical for ANY dog regardless of if they are going onto the off-leash training (which Maggie is not doing) or if the dog is going onto the Tech Savvy, ecollar training (which Maggie is doing). The Week 6 'magic' CAN and WILL SAVE a dog's life one day.
Anyway, we are winding down with Maggie's training and anticipate being done no later than mid-October. Mickie, I know you read and study the HOMEWORK faithfully, when would you like to do a few lessons with Maggie when either Jessi or I are available? Soon, we will begin the Transfer Protocal' so Maggie understands you too have the authority and skill set to be her handler.
See you tomorrow morning around 8:05-8:15 am to pick Maggie up for her lesson and for Maggie to be our Demo Dog for a student just beginning the Week 1 Longe Line in an open field.
